Redundancy is not
a standing start.

Losing a role is not the same as losing what you know. Organisations across the UK are adopting AI and finding they are short of people who understand the work it is being aimed at. The Institute of AI, the UK's professional body for AI, offers free membership, free learning, and fully or partially funded accreditation pathways while you are out of work and looking.

— The first month —

A plan that assumes
you have had a week.

No sprint, no ninety-day transformation. Four steps paced for someone who has just had bad news and still has to do the washing up.

  1. Week one

    Do nothing ambitious

Sort the practical things, tell the people who need telling, and rest. A redundancy is a shock before it is an opportunity, and a plan built in the first week is usually built by someone who is not thinking clearly yet.

  2. Week two

    Take stock of what transfers

Write down what you actually did, not what your job title said. Process knowledge, domain judgement, the ability to tell when a number is wrong. These are the parts of AI work that are hardest to hire for and hardest to teach.

  3. Week three

    Start the five minutes

Open Learn AI and take one lesson a day between applications. Free, no sign-up wall, written in plain English by a professional body rather than a vendor. The point is not to become an engineer. It is to stop being filtered out by vocabulary.

  4. Week four onward

Put a floor under your standing

When the framework language reads as familiar, sit the assessment. While you are out of work and looking, the Institute of AI offers fully or partially funded accreditation pathways, so a credential is within reach at a point when spending is the last thing you want to do.

— Worth hearing plainly —

Four things that are
true this morning.

Your experience did not expire

Organisations adopting AI are short of people who understand the work AI is being pointed at. That understanding is the thing you were made redundant holding, and it is not easily replaced.

You do not need to retrain from scratch

Moving into AI work rarely means starting again. It usually means adding a layer of AI literacy to a field you already know, and being able to prove that layer exists.

Free is genuinely free here

Membership costs nothing and asks for no card. Learn AI has no sign-up wall. There is no call to book and nobody will try to sell you a course.

A credential travels further than a story

Explaining a gap is harder than showing what you did with it. An assessed, publicly verifiable credential answers the question before it is asked.

— Common questions —

After redundancy, the practical questions.

Is it realistic to move into AI work at this stage?+
For most people it is not a move into AI work so much as a move into work where AI is now part of the job. That is a much shorter distance, and your existing field is usually the strongest place to make it.
What does it cost while I have no income?+
Membership is free and Learn AI is free. If you decide you want an assessed credential while you are out of work and looking, the Institute of AI offers fully or partially funded accreditation pathways, covering some or all of the assessment and accreditation fees.
How do I explain the gap on my CV?+
By having something in it. A credential dated during your search, with a logged CPD record behind it, turns a gap into a stretch of deliberate development, and it is verifiable rather than asserted.
Will anyone try to sell me something?+
No. The Institute of AI has no software to resell and no vendor affiliations in accreditation. Learn AI, the glossary and the quick answers are open, and there is no call to book before you can use anything.

Take the week.
Then take a lesson.

When you are ready, the Institute of AI is free to join, free to learn from, and offers funded accreditation pathways while you are looking for work.
