AI careers:
the complete guide.
What AI jobs actually exist, what they actually pay, and how you actually get one. Honest, UK-specific, and written by the professional body for AI.
One of the fastest-growing
careers in the UK.
What AI jobs actually look like.
Eight common AI roles, in plain English. Honest UK salaries, real day-to-day work, and the IoAI accreditation level each one tends to map to.
Turn messy organisational data into clear insight: models, dashboards, and the honest "what does this mean?" conversation.
Take a working model and make it production-ready: fast, reliable, and unlikely to fall over at 3am.
Decide what the model should actually do. Translate user needs into roadmaps, tradeoffs, and shipping decisions.
Spot harm before it ships. Set policy, run reviews, and answer the hard questions when regulators (and journalists) ring.
Walk into any organisation and figure out what AI should, and shouldn't, do for them. Then help them do it.
Push the field forward. Publish, prototype, and answer the questions nobody else is asking yet.
Build the pipes models live in: training, deploying, monitoring, retraining. The plumbing nobody sees until it breaks.
Coax the best out of large language models. Half writer, half engineer, all "have you tried rephrasing it?".
Four ways into AI.
There's no single path into AI. We've sketched the four most common, and we'll point you at the next step on each.
Computer science, data science, maths, or one of the growing list of dedicated AI degrees. Look for IoAI-recognised programmes with real industry projects baked in.
Earn a salary while you train. AI and data science apprenticeships now run from Level 4 right up to Level 7 (master's equivalent), with no tuition fees to pay.
Free courses, open-source projects, and a public portfolio can absolutely land you a role. Hard, but proven, and getting easier every year.
Already a developer, analyst, teacher, or domain expert? Your background is an advantage, not a problem. Specialise in, don't start over.
