— Careers —

You were away.
The field moved, not you.

A career break, parental leave, caring, illness or a spell abroad leaves the same problem: everything in AI sounds new and nobody tells you which parts actually matter. The Institute of AI, the UK's professional body for AI, is a free place to close that distance, and a place to get the current credential a return to work quietly demands.

— What actually changed —

Four shifts, and none
of them are technical.

The headlines were about models. The changes that affect your next application were about how organisations work, which is a much easier thing to catch up on.

AI was a specialist functionAI is a line item in ordinary roles

Marketing, finance, operations and HR job adverts now carry AI expectations. The specialists did not take the jobs. The expectations spread into them.

The question was whether it worksThe question is whether it is governed

Organisations have stopped asking if AI can do the task and started asking who is accountable when it does it badly. That shift created roles.

Tool knowledge was the differentiatorJudgement is the differentiator

Anyone can open a chatbot. Far fewer can say where its answer should not be trusted, which is precisely the skill an employer cannot hire quickly.

Credentials meant a vendor certificateCredentials mean assessed practice

Vendor certs still prove tool fluency. An accreditation from a professional body proves the standard of your practice, and it can be verified by anyone.

— Coming back —

Four moves, in the
order that helps.

None of this requires a retraining programme or a year out. It requires a fortnight of attention and one assessment.

1

Close the vocabulary gap first

Before anything else, spend a week on Learn AI until the terms in job adverts read as English. It is free, there is no sign-up wall, and it removes the single biggest source of the feeling that you are behind.

2

Reconnect what you already know

Your field did not stop mattering. The organisations adopting AI in it need people who understand the work well enough to tell when a model has got it wrong, and that understanding is exactly what a break does not erase.

3

Get a current, dated credential

A break raises the currency question whether or not anyone asks it out loud. An accreditation dated this year, with a CPD record running behind it, answers that question without you having to raise it yourself.

4

Use a funded pathway while you look

If you are out of work and looking, the Institute of AI offers fully or partially funded accreditation pathways, covering some or all of your assessment and accreditation fees.

— Common questions —

Coming back, the questions people have.

How far behind am I really?+
Less than it feels. The vocabulary moves fast and the underlying ideas move slowly, so most of the gap closes in a fortnight of short sittings on Learn AI. What you knew about your own field has not moved at all.
Will a break count against me?+
It raises a currency question, and a current credential answers it. An accreditation dated this year, with logged continuing professional development behind it, is a better answer than any paragraph of explanation.
Can I be assessed at the level I left at?+
You are assessed at the level your practice supports now, against a published competency framework. For many returners that is the level they left at or close to it, because judgement is the part that does not decay.
What does any of this cost?+
Membership is free and Learn AI is free. Accreditation is a one-off assessment fee and a one-off accreditation fee for your level, and if you are out of work and looking, a fully or partially funded pathway can cover some or all of both.

Come back current,
not apologetic.

Close the vocabulary gap for free, then get assessed so your return comes with a credential dated this year rather than an explanation of the years before it.
