You are not behind on AI. You are behind on its vocabulary, which is a much smaller problem. Work through Learn AI until job adverts stop containing words you skip over.
Your Learn AI progress, tracked from the day you join.
The hard part of a first AI role is not the technology. It is convincing someone to take you seriously before you have the job that would have proved you. The Institute of AI, the UK's professional body for AI, closes that gap with free learning and an assessed credential anyone can verify, and while you are looking for work your accreditation pathway can be fully or partially funded.
This is the whole path. Each stage produces something an employer can see, which is what stops the effort disappearing into your own head.

Apply AI to a task you genuinely understand, at work, for a charity, or for yourself. Small and finished teaches you more than large and abandoned, and it gives you something to describe in an interview.
A worked example you can talk through without notes.
Sit the assessment at the level your practice supports, for a one-off £29.99. It is evidence-based and measured against a published competency framework, so a pass says something specific rather than something flattering.
Post-nominals, a badge, and a public verification page.
Most first AI jobs are not called AI jobs. They are existing roles with AI scope attached, in sectors you already know. That is the door, and it is wide open.
A credential that travels across every one of them.
While you are out of work and looking, the Institute of AI offers fully or partially funded accreditation pathways, covering some or all of the one-off assessment and accreditation fees. You carry the credential through every application in your search.
You need a computer science degree.
You need to demonstrate a standard. The competency framework says what that standard is, and it is not a degree.
You need to be able to train models.
Most AI roles in UK organisations are about applying, governing and evaluating AI, not building it from scratch.
You need years of AI experience first.
Student is the entry level of the ladder and exists for exactly this point in a career.
You need to pay for an expensive course.
Learn AI is free with no sign-up wall, and while you are job seeking your accreditation pathway can be fully or partially funded.
Join the Institute of AI free, work through the learning between applications, and arrive at the assessment ready. The fees for what follows can be fully or partially funded while you are looking.
