The longer story
The UK currently takes a principles-based, sector-specific approach to AI regulation rather than a single comprehensive law like the EU AI Act. Existing regulators (the FCA, ICO, Ofcom, CMA, MHRA, and others) are each developing AI guidance for their sectors. The government's AI white paper outlines five cross-sector principles: safety, transparency, fairness, accountability, and contestability. While there is no standalone AI Act in the UK yet, organisations must still comply with existing laws including GDPR, the Equality Act, and sector-specific regulations as they apply to AI systems.
