The longer story
No, and this is one of the few questions in this area with a fairly settled answer. Detectors work on statistical patterns rather than any evidence of use, so they return false positives on genuine work and miss AI text that has been lightly edited. Studies have repeatedly found higher false positive rates for students writing in a second language, and for neurodivergent students whose writing is more formulaic. OpenAI withdrew its own detector in 2023 on accuracy grounds. A score can reasonably prompt a conversation, but it cannot support a finding of misconduct on its own, and schools that have relied on one have often found themselves unable to defend the decision when challenged.
