What is the difference between AI and machine learning?

AI is the broad goal of making machines that can perform intelligent tasks. Machine learning (ML) is one method for achieving that goal, it lets systems learn from data rather than being explicitly programmed. Deep learning is a further subset of ML that uses neural networks with many layers. In short: all machine learning is AI, but not all AI is machine learning. When people talk about AI today, they usually mean systems built using machine learning techniques.
