“OK, now make it sound more dumb like I wrote it.”

That was the actual prompt a high school student gave ChatGPT - and then submitted as their final English essay.

This isn’t just about academic dishonesty; it’s a stark reflection of a deeper issue: a growing disconnect between young learners and the essential cognitive effort behind critical thinking, literacy and independent reasoning. AI tools like ChatGPT can unlock incredible opportunities for learning and creativity. But, when they’re misused as shortcuts around genuine thought, we risk undermining the very skills education aims to nurture. Critical thinking isn’t optional - it’s fundamental, especially in an age shaped by powerful technologies.

At the Institute of AI (IoAI), we champion responsible AI that enhances human potential rather than eroding it. We’re dedicated to building professional standards for practitioners who understand that true innovation involves questioning, contextualising and reflecting - not simply prompting and pasting.

Let’s ensure the next generation doesn’t just use AI - they master it, challenge it and find their own voice within it.

We’re building the standards for the AI practitioner. Join us.
