When you ask an AI assistant a question about a document, several things may need to happen before it can give a useful answer. The file must be accessible, its content must be interpreted, relevant information must be selected and the response must reflect it accurately. If you ask the assistant to act, another boundary appears: changing something outside the conversation. This lesson explains those stages with text-only examples. It does not depend on a particular product, subscription or interface. Features and permissions vary between systems, so the aim is to understand what to check wherever you work. You need notes and a calculator. A chatbot is optional. No uploads, images or connected accounts are required; all practice material is reproduced here in text. You will finish with a method for tracing an answer from source to action.

None of these are hard requirements. The lesson is easier if they are already familiar, but everything it uses is explained along the way, so you can start without them.
Section one is open to everyone. Create a free account to work through the rest and take the quiz.
Attempt the activities before reading the answer notes. Optional further experimentation with a live tool is outside this lesson's timing. An assistant can generate a plausible answer using its trained model and current conversation. That is different from reading your file, consulting a database or changing a calendar entry. A conversational interface can conceal these differences because the outputs all look like messages.
