Generative AI refers to systems that create new content, including text, images, audio, video, and code, based on patterns learned from training data. Unlike traditional AI that classifies or predicts, it produces original outputs in response to a prompt. It is the technology behind writing assistants, image generators, and code completion tools.
Why it matters
Generative AI is what put AI into everyday hands, and it is also where most of the practical questions, about accuracy, copyright, and misuse, now sit.
A worked example
You ask for 'a friendly two-line out-of-office message', and the model writes a brand-new one rather than retrieving a stored template.
Common confusion
Generative AI does not look up answers in a database. It generates plausible content from patterns, which is also why it can sound confident yet be wrong.
