— The idea —

A career spine, not a single exam.

Most AI credentials test one product on one afternoon. A practitioner is more than that. The work runs the whole way from framing a problem to standing behind a system in production, and a credential worth holding should recognise that span rather than a single skill.

IoAI certification is role-agnostic on purpose. Whether you build models, ship products, advise a board or run a team, the same question is asked: can you practise well, and account for the results? You answer it once at the level that fits you now, then progress as your judgement and responsibility grow.

Each level is a recognised grade in its own right, assessed against IoAI’s competency framework. You apply for the level that matches where you are, and progression is upward only: you move to a level above your current one as your practice earns it.

Competence measured across the lifecycle.

Whatever your level, the assessment looks at practice rather than recall. These are the five things a competent AI practitioner is expected to do well, and the depth expected rises as you climb the spine.

Frame the problem
Decide whether AI is the right answer at all, define what good looks like, and set the measure a result will be judged against before any model is built.
Work with data honestly
Judge whether the data is accurate, permissioned and representative, and understand what it can and cannot support without overreaching.
Build and evaluate
Choose an approach proportionate to the task, evaluate it against a real baseline, and know the difference between a demo and something dependable.
Deploy and operate
Ship into production with monitoring, fallbacks and a plan for when a model drifts, degrades or is used in ways it was never meant for.
Govern and communicate
Explain a system in plain language, name who is accountable for it, and stand behind the decisions it informs to a client, a board or a regulator.

The Institute of AI is the professional body for artificial intelligence in the United Kingdom, and it sets the standard the profession is measured against. A grade carries that standing, not one employer’s or one course provider’s opinion of you.

Publicly verifiable

Every accredited member receives a verification badge that an employer, client or collaborator can check, so the claim on your profile is one anyone can confirm.

Assessed, not bought

Accreditation is earned against a published competency framework at each level, reviewed with the references you nominate. There is no route that trades money for a title.

Independent by construction

Is this one exam or the whole four levels?+

You apply for a single level at a time, the one that matches your current practice. The four levels are a spine you progress along over a career, not a set of exams to clear at once. Progression is upward only: you apply for a level above the one you already hold.

Which level should I apply for?+

Student suits those still building the fundamentals, Associate suits early-career practitioners working under guidance, Professional recognises independent end-to-end competence, and Fellow is for senior practitioners who set standards. The competency framework describes what each level expects so you can place yourself honestly.

What does it cost?+

What actually stands behind the credential?+

Membership carries an annual continuing professional development target that rises with the level: 10 hours at Student, 15 at Associate and 25 at Professional and Fellow. Logging your CPD is how the credential stays current rather than frozen at the moment you passed.
