— Free, and open —

Real learning, with nothing to buy.

Learn AI is one of the Institute of AI's own public platforms. It is free because raising AI literacy across the country is part of what a professional body is for, not a funnel towards a paid product. There is no wall in front of any of it.

Lessons

Short, structured lessons that build understanding one idea at a time, from what AI is to how to use it well.

Glossary

Every term that turns up in the headlines, defined in plain English so nothing trips you up mid-sentence.

Quick answers

Straight, sourced answers to the questions people actually ask about AI, without the marketing spin.

Interactive explainers

Hands-on explainers that let you poke at how a model works, so the ideas stick rather than wash over you.

— The curriculum —

A syllabus you can follow, one track at a time.

Instead of a scattered pile of articles, the free courses are laid out as tracks that build on each other. Start wherever you are and work through as much as you like. Every track ends with a starting point you can open straight away.

  1. 01

    AI foundations

What AI actually is, in plain terms, and where it already sits in the tools and services you use every day.

    • The difference between AI, machine learning and the apps built on top of them
    • How a model learns from data, without a line of maths
    • What AI does well today, and the things it genuinely cannot do
    Start the foundation lessons
  2. 02

    How large language models work

What is going on inside a chatbot, so its answers stop feeling like magic and start making sense.

    • How a language model predicts text, and why that shapes everything it says
    • Why models can sound completely confident while being wrong
    • What a prompt, a token and a context window really mean
    Open the interactive explainers
  3. 03

    Using AI at work

How to fold AI into real tasks responsibly, without handing over things that should stay private.

    • The everyday jobs AI genuinely speeds up, and the ones it does not
    • What information should never go into a public tool
    • Checking an answer against a real source before you rely on it
    Browse the workplace lessons
  4. 04

    Prompting well

How to ask for what you want and get a useful answer back, first time, far more often.

    • Writing a clear brief instead of a vague request
    • Giving the model the context and examples it needs
    • Refining a reply step by step rather than starting again
    Read the quick answers
  5. 05

    AI safety and ethics

Where AI can go wrong, from bias to misinformation, and how to use it in a way you can stand behind.

    • How bias finds its way into models and their results
    • Privacy, copyright and accountability, explained plainly
    • Spotting AI-generated content and understanding its limits
    Continue with the ethics lessons
  6. 06

    The language of AI

The words and acronyms that show up everywhere, defined without jargon so the rest of the reading is easier.

    • Plain-English definitions you can look up in seconds
    • The terms behind the headlines, decoded
    • A glossary to keep open alongside every other track
    Open the AI glossary
— Why free, and who for —

Free because it is the point, not the pitch.

The Institute of AI is the UK's professional body for AI, and it does not resell tools or take vendor money. Learn AI exists so that people across the country can understand AI on their own terms, which is why the lessons, glossary and quick answers cost nothing and ask for nothing in return. No product is being sold to you between the paragraphs.

The courses are written to be honest about what AI can and cannot do, grounded in the UK context you actually work in, and free of the jargon that usually makes this feel harder than it is. If you later want a credential to show for it, a Student Accreditation recognises these foundations, but it is entirely optional. The learning is free either way.

— Who it is for —
  • Curious beginners who just want to understand what the fuss is about
  • Working professionals adding AI to an ordinary day at their desk
  • Managers and teams weighing up how, and whether, to adopt it
  • Students and career changers building a solid first foundation
  • Anyone who has been put off by jargon and vendor sales talk
— Common questions —

Free AI courses in the UK, answered plainly.

Are the AI courses really free?+
Yes. Every lesson, the glossary and the quick answers on Learn AI are free, with no card, no trial and no hidden upgrade. Widening AI literacy is part of what a professional body is for.
Do I need to create an account or sign up?+
No. There is no sign-up wall. You can work through the courses, search the glossary and read the quick answers without an account. You would only create one if you later choose to pursue a Student Accreditation, which is optional.
Do I need any technical background?+
None at all. The courses are written for complete beginners and deliberately avoid jargon, starting from what AI is before going anywhere near how it works. Working professionals will find the later tracks useful too, so you can start wherever you are.
Are these courses specific to the UK?+
They are written by the UK's professional body for AI and grounded in the British context, including the regulation, data protection and everyday examples that apply here. That is what sets them apart from generic, vendor-produced material.
Do I get a certificate at the end?+
Learn AI is about genuine understanding rather than a certificate for its own sake, so the courses themselves are simply free to work through. If you want a recognised credential, IoAI offers a Student Accreditation that recognises these foundations, separate from the free learning.
