Nurses Show Cautious Optimism About AI: They aren’t rejecting it. They’re inviting us to do better.

As artificial intelligence continues to shape the future of healthcare, nurses are emerging as both advocates and critics of its integration. Their views reflect a grounded, real-world perspective - one that AI developers and decision-makers cannot afford to ignore.

Recent feedback from clinical settings shows nurses are cautiously optimistic about AI. Many see the potential to reduce administrative tasks, streamline patient monitoring and improve care delivery. However, alongside this optimism lies a consistent message: trust, usability and human-centred design are non-negociables.

Nurses have raised key concerns:

  • Accuracy and transparency

Clinical decisions require clarity. Tools that generate output without clear reasoning or explanation are met with scepticism.

  • Training and support

Without proper onboarding, new systems become barriers, not benefits.

  • Preserving the human touch

AI should never replace the empathy, intuition and connection that define quality care.

At the Institute of AI (IoAI), we believe these concerns should shape how AI is designed and deployed in healthcare. Systems must be developed WITH not just FOR the professionals who use them. Trust isn’t built through automation alone. It’s earned through collaboration, transparency and a deep respect for the human role in complex environments like medicine.

Nurses aren’t rejecting AI. They’re inviting us to do better. And, their insight is one of the most important signals we have for building responsible, effective technology today.
